Research-Intensive Programs in Physical Therapy

Research-Intensive Programs in Physical Therapy (RIPPT) is a consortium within ACAPT whose purpose is to promote academic excellence by strengthening the community of research-intensive physical therapy programs in the Academic Council.

The purpose of the Research Intensive Programs in Physical Therapy Consortium is to:

  • Promote the importance of organized research to contribute to improved health care and excellence in physical therapy education.
  • Establish a forum for research-intensive programs to share strategies for organizing, building, and supporting their research enterprises.
  • Develop an exchange that will promote research collaborations across institutions.
  • Serve as a resource for programs that are attempting to develop into research-intensive programs.
  • Develop a set of accepted benchmarks of research activity

Meetings are held at CSM and ELC.

The features on this website are:

  • A listing of PhD programs suitable for preparing physical therapists to become independent investigators who can succeed at RIPPT programs.
  • Listing of grants held by faculty at RIPPT member institutions to provide bench-marking and to allowing development of collaborations
  • Listing of annual publications from RIPPT member programs to provide for bench-marking
  • (coming) List postdoctoral fellowship training opportunities at RIPPT member institutions
  • Allowing editing / entry of the above information by RIPPT members
  • Provide a place to get information of use to RIPPT members and those interested in our activities

RIPPT was the first consortium formed under ACAPT.  So far, our major activities have been centered around building the consortium and working together within the consortium.  We have held workshops on structuring PhD programs, funding for graduate students, and the shortage of PhD trained physical therapists.  We have also developed a collaboration with the Section on Research to bring together PhD students and Postdoctoral Fellows annually at CSM.  We are presently working as a task force on defining the problems with the shortage of PhD trained physical therapists in order to recommend strategies to address this problem.
This section of the ACAPT website for the RIPPT consortium is currently under development.  We are working towards a system that allows member institutions to log in and enter / edit data for their publications, grants, and PhD programs.  We are hoping to add a section for listing opportunities in postdoctoral fellowships.  Please bear with us as we bring these features online.

  • Increase collaborations with other societies with rehabilitation interests.
  • Market the need for qualified faculty.
  • What can we do to increase research funding? Increase influence at NIH and other funding agencies
  • Provide suggestions on how to increase the number of faculty with research training and funding successes.

RIPPT holds regular business meetings twice a year, once at the Educational leadership Conference (typically attended by all program directors), and again at the Combined Section Meeting (typically attended by PTs with active research programs).  We have not routinely had activities scheduled at NEXT.
To learn more about RIPPT, what we do, and the kinds of memberships, please review the guidelines below.
The Research Intensive Programs in Physical Therapy (RIPPT) is a group of PT programs where the promotion and tenure requirements include major accomplishments in research as a requirement for those on that track.  These are programs where faculty are involved in the training of PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, and one or more faculty are funded federally at the R01 level.  Among many of these programs, multiple faculty have substantial funding, there are multiple laboratories supported, and there may be training grants and core facility support grants.  Faculty in these programs balance their activities in research and professional service with their participation int he entry level education of physical therapists.  DPT students in these programs often have the opportunity to work along side faculty for a specialization in research or a dual degree DPT/PhD.  Intensive involvement in research is typically optional, not required, for DPT students in RIPPT programs because there are PhD students for long-term projects.
