DESCRIPTION:Obesity in the United States exceeds 35% of the adult populatio
n and costs society over 149 billion dollars annually. Iowa is currently r
anked #4 in the country for obesity. We believe it will take bold leadersh
ip to overcome the factors that contribute to physical inactivity\, obesit
y\, and reduced health among citizens. We also believe that physical thera
pists are experts in the promotion and prescription of physical activity\,
exercise\, and movement for people with and without injury\, disease\, an
d age-related impairments. The 2019 Iowa Educational Summit will consider
the potential role that physical therapists may play in reversing rural Io
wa's obesity epidemic. We have assembled an outstanding roster of presente
rs including rural health physical therapists\, public health and communit
y engagement leaders\, academic and research leaders\, and Iowa legislator
s. Attendees and presenters at the Summit will identify the major barriers
to exercise-based health initiatives. Most importantly\, they will offer
solutions to move the citizens of Iowa to a healthier "state of well-being
