National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE)

NCCE lttrhd-final-04282020

The National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE) engages academic and clinical educators through partnerships to advance excellence and innovation in physical therapist education.

How to join NCCE

NCCE represents clinical education faculty (academic and clinical) affiliated with entry-level programs that are ACAPT institutional members who serve in clinical education roles.*  Our members are employed by ACAPT member institutions or are a clinical education affiliate with a member institution.

Each ACAPT member institution should support the participation of one clinical education team consisting of at least one academic and one clinical faculty member, both of whom should be APTA members and may hold at least one of the positions described below.

The clinical faculty member should be directly involved with the institution's clinical education program. The academic faculty member is responsible for registering its NCCE Academic & Clinical Institutional Pair and for maintaining the currency of this information. See NCCE benefits and FAQ here.

Have You Registered Your NCCE Team?

To register your team, please complete the "NCCE Team Registration" form. Only team registrations will be accepted so you will need to register both persons at the same time. Please have the APTA membership numbers and emails for both team members ready prior to initiating the registration process. Again, teams are formed as institutional pairs and must register as a team in order for the institution's team to be approved.

If you have a change in team membership, please contact the NCCE Secretary, Jamie Bayliss, at ncce@acapt.org

NCCE's mission

To lead a culture of shared accountability for physical therapist education by connecting stakeholders across academic and practice communities to facilitate integration of best practices in clinical education.

Our objectives are to support the Mission of ACAPT to promote excellence in physical therapy education by:

  • Fostering academic-clinical partnerships that provide a collective voice in academic physical therapy in support of clinical education.

  • Being a leader in advancing a clinical education research agenda that guides data driven decision making.

  • Cultivating a national infrastructure to support efficient and effective sharing of clinical education information/resources to advance a collaborative culture of quality clinical education.

  • Influencing the development of academic and clinical educator leaders.

  • The NCCE will meet at least once annually at ELC in conjunction with the annual meeting of the ACAPT and, when possible, during CSM.

Common terminology

In 2017, ACAPT's National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE) developed ACAPT's Physical Therapists Clinical Education Glossary to address the problem that academic and clinical faculty often use different terminology when describing their work within physical therapy education.

*Directors of Clinical Education (DCE), Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education (ACCEs), Clinical Faculty - e.g.Site Coordinators of Clinical Education (SCCE) and Clinical Instructors (CI), Clinical Education Coordinators (CEC), and Clinical Administrators/Managers (CAM).

ACAPT's National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE) Region Map

This map represents the percent of NCCE member pairs relative to ACAPT member institutions as of October 2021. It divides the membership into regions and displays each region's NCCE Board representative.

NCCE Regional Liaisons

The NCCE Board has collaborated with the ACAPT Board to identify regions and liaisons that align with the ACAPT regions, for communication purposes with membership. Below, we have listed the regions and states assigned to each NCCE Board representative and their email addresses.

See regional consortia and leadership contacts here.

Attend the NCCE membership meeting to learn more about our initiatives to improve clinical education.  While voting is restricted to NCCE members, non-member DCEs and their clinical partners are invited to participate.  This meeting will be at the Educational Leadership Conference (ELC) on Saturday, October 23, 2021 from 8 - 10 a.m.
