National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE)

The National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE) represents engages academic and clinical educators through partnerships to advance excellence and innovation in physical therapist education. 

 

Our consortium represents Clinical Education Faculty (academic and clinical) affiliated with entry-level Programs that are institutional members who serve in clinical education roles such as: Directors of Clinical Education (DCE), Academic Coordinators of Clinical Education (ACCEs), Clinical Faculty (Site Coordinators of Clinical Education (SCCE) and Clinical Instructors (CI)), Clinical Education Coordinators (CEC), and Clinical Administrators/Managers (CAM). Our members are employed by ACAPT member institutions or are a clinical education affiliate with a member institution.

Each ACAPT member institution will support the participation of one clinical education team consisting of at least one academic and one clinical faculty member, both of whom should be APTA members and may hold at least one of the positions described above. The clinical faculty member should be directly involved with the institution's clinical education program. The academic faculty member is responsible for registering its "NCCE Institutional Pair/Team" and for maintaining the currency of this information. 

 

 

Our Mission

To lead a culture of shared accountability for physical therapist education by connecting stakeholders across academic and practice communities to facilitate integration of best practices in clinical education.

Our objectives are to support the Mission of ACAPT to promote excellence in physical therapy education by:

  • Fostering academic-clinical partnerships that provide a collective voice in academic physical therapy in support of clinical education. 
  • Being a leader in advancing a clinical education research agenda that guides data driven decision making.
  • Cultivating a national infrastructure to support efficient and effective sharing of clinical education information/resources to advance a collaborative culture of quality clinical education.
  • Influencing the development of academic and clinical educator leaders.
  • The NCCE will meet at least once annually at ELC in conjunction with the annual meeting of the ACAPT and, when possible, during CSM.

Have Your Registered Your NCCE Team?

To register your team, please complete the "NCCE Team Registration" form. Only team registrations will be accepted so you will need to register both persons at the same time. Please have the APTA membership numbers and emails for both team members ready prior to initiating the registration process. Again, teams are formed as institutional pairs and must register as a team in order for the institution's team to be approved.

Leadership Team Positions

The ACAPT National Consortium of Clinical Educators (NCCE) will hold elections in the spring-summer during the ACAPT election cycle.  If your institution's NCCE Team has registered via the NCCE online registration, ONE VOTE may be cast for an institution's NCCE team.  If you have not yet registered your institution's NCCE Team, do so now by clicking on the Request to Join Box above. As with any organization, formation of a leadership team is representative of its members who vote.

Persons elected to a leadership position are expected to attend the annual APTA Education Leadership Conference where the NCCE annual business meeting will be held.

NCCE Leadership Positions and Description of Responsibilities:

Chair:
The Chairperson shall preside at all meetings of the Consortium and shall be an Exofficio member of all committees except the Nominating Committee. S/he shall be the designated liaison to the ACAPT Board of Directors unless otherwise determined by the NCCE Board of Directors; prepare and submit written reports of the activities of the NCCE to ACAPT; prepare and submit an annual written report of the activities of the Consortium to its members. The Chairperson will assure currency of essential information on the ACAPT NCCE Website.

Vice Chair:
The Vice Chairperson shall assume the duties of the Chairperson at the request of the Chairperson or in the absence or incapacitation of the Chairperson and oversee NCCE ad hoc committees as a voting committee member.  The Vice Chair shall serve as the Parliamentarian during the Annual and Special meetings. The Vice Chair shall represent the NCCE related to any Program Planning responsibilities for ELC. 

Secretary:
The Secretary shall be responsible for keeping the minutes of all NCCE and Board meetings; notify NCCE members of the date, time, and place of NCCE meetings; maintain the NCCE’s archives and correspondence; and make NCCE’s minutes and rules and regulations available to the membership and to ACAPT’s executive office. 

Nominating Committee Member:
The Nominating Committee shall consist of three (3) members.  Those eligible to serve are either the Academic or Clinical partner from an Institutional pair from an ACAPT member institution elected by the membership for three (3) year terms, with one (1) member being elected each year.  At least one (1) of the committee members shall be a clinical partner. The senior member of the committee shall serve as Committee Chair for the last year of his/her term.

The nominating committee shall prepare a slate of one (1) or more names for each office to be filled.  The slate (i.e. list of candidates) shall be published in the NCCE newsletter and distributed to the membership at least 60 days prior to the election.  The Nominating Chair will provide the slate, together with the information on each candidate, at least 30 days in advance of the election in the same fashion followed for the publication of the slate.

Directors-At-Large (DAL):

Academic Directors at Large- The Academic Directors at Large shall represent institutional DCEs and ACCEs on the NCCE Board of Directors. The Academic Directors at Large shall serve on the Board of Directors to provide for broad-based input into the decision making process of the leadership team and assist with dissemination of information to the membership. They will serve as a regional liaison as assigned. They will perform such other duties as may be applicable to the office or as directed by the Board. 

Clinical Directors at Large- The Clinical Directors at Large shall represent the clinical partners of ACAPT institutions. The Clinical Directors at Large shall serve on the NCCE Board of Directors and shall provide for broad-based input into the decision making process of the leadership team and assist with dissemination of information to the membership. They will serve as a regional liaison as assigned.  They will perform such other duties as may be applicable to the office or as directed by the Board.

A Message from the NCCE Chair

Thank you for the opportunity to serve PT Clinical Education for the last 2 years. You could have launched a write-in campaign during this last voting cycle, so I appreciate the fact that you didn't do that, and I look forward to working with all of you over the next 2 years. I have had the pleasure of working with others you have elected to this Board who are just as passionate about making a difference, to build an infrastructure for the NCCE as part of ACAPT that has poised us well to advise programs on the future of clinical education. The ACAPT Board knows we are here, and needs us to be rational and productive, and present meaningful data as the basis for decision making. I can't remember a time in my career in which clinical education has been this much in the spotlight, and I see tremendous opportunity for this organization to create evidence-based clinical education practices that are sustainable and are consistent with the vision for the doctor of physical therapy.

For several years we have listened to, "clinical education is broken," without quite knowing what that means. We will figure out why these perceptions exist and consider all stakeholder groups in examining our practices.

My role has allowed me to interact with other leadership in our profession, which has been a great opportunity to advocate for the NCCE, and a learning experience for me. I have been able to see first-hand the positivity and transparency that is a value of the current ACAPT Board and the APTA leadership, at the staff level AND the Board level. I feel very positive about our collaborations going into the near future.

 Going into the next 1-2 years, here is what I see for us:

-We will capitalize on our collective energy and talents, by creating opportunities for members to get involved in the work of the NCCE

 -We will figure out how to communicate in a way that is functional for this group, and collaborate with other groups to create stronger communication networks. This includes harnessing the power of regional consortia.

 -We will prioritize issues and questions related to moving forward on clinical education, and collaborate to take the right first steps -We will develop the concept of "partnership" on multiple levels, between academic and clinical settings, and between academic programs, to contribute to that sustainability and work smarter, not harder.

 -We will contribute to changing our educational culture by demonstrating that clinical faculty are an integral part of the faculty, and in so doing, will put forward the voice of the CCCE, the CI, and the clinical manager and practice owner, in building our sustainable practices.

 -We will contribute to the body of evidence around teaching and learning practices, placement processes, and outcomes of clinical education.

These are my hopes for this organization in the short run. I'm not patient when I want to make progress and when we are representing others, but have learned that forming an organization that will do important work takes time and thought. The last 2 years have gone fast. With these positive and forward-thinking leaders you have elected,  I hope to continue to create an open and approachable environment for communication, and opportunities for others who have important things to contribute.
