Career paths within PT academia are growing! With over 180 PT educator positions open, there are many opportunities for students and clinicians to pursue a career in higher education.
There are many avenues available to DPT students and practicing PTs to advance your education and career following entry-level PT training. The PT profession needs more academicians with PhDs. You’ll discover new stats and insights into why you might pursue a PhD or other post-professional education AND how you can choose the right program for you.
We’ll discuss the cost, benefits, and impact on your PT career by pursuing a PhD, residency or fellowship. You’ll also learn key differences and questions you should be considering when choosing the right program and mentor for you - as well as how to make your application more competitive.

- See the benefits of pursuing a PhD and a possible career in academia.
- Define the key differences between PhD, residency and fellowship programs.
- Define strategies to make your application more competitive as well as find the right mentor.
- Articulate the key questions you should ask programs to evaluate which program is the best fit for you and your unique career goals.
Target audience: Physical therapy students, new graduates, clinical partners, faculty, clinical instructors, site coordinators of clinical education (SCCEs), and educators interested in pursuing a PhD, residency, fellowship and academia.
