Speed-dating for activity sensors: what is the right activity monitor for your research?

ACAPT's Research-Intensive Programs in Physical Therapy (RIPPT) promotes academic excellence by strengthening the community of research-intensive physical therapy programs.  PT instructors at ACAPT member institutions can join RIPPT for free.

The RIPPT seminar series is a monthly webinar that provides an interactive forum on topics of interest to the community of researchers, academics, and clinicians in physical therapy and rehabilitation-related fields.

The overarching theme for 2022 is: How research informs clinical practice and clinical practice informs research.

In this session, experts in the field will have 5 minutes each to describe the commercially-available sensor they use for activity monitoring outside the laboratory. Each will discuss the capabilities, pros and cons of their sensor. Following the series of sensor highlight talks, the panel of speakers will be available to answer participant specific questions and contrast the different sensors available.

Learning objectives

 The participant will reflect and identify:

• Understand the functionality of 7 different activity monitors that are commercially available. 
• Identify 2 advantages and 2 disadvantages of each of the activity monitors
• Be able to compare and contrast the technical features of each sensor including the battery life, acquisition frequency, type of data collected, and post-processing demands. 
• Analyze each sensor for its ability to acquire data relevant to the participants targeted area of research

Target audience: Faculty, post-docs, program directors/chairs, PhD students, practicing physical therapist and others interested in activity sensors.
