Call for Volunteers for the Panel on Simulation in Physical Therapy Education

ACAPT is excited to announce the call for volunteers to participate in continued follow-up work from the Clinical Education Summit (Summit).  A Strategic Initiative Panel is being formed to focus on recommendations related to Simulation in PT Education. 

BACKGROUND

In October, 2014, ACAPT, The Education Section, and APTA hosted the Summit with a goal of reaching agreement on best practice in physical therapist clinical education.  The final report from the Summit contained eleven recommendations that supported the vision of achieving a common culture of teaching and learning based on strong partnerships and shared responsibility for preparing all students to practice as Doctors of Physical Therapy. These recommendations were prioritized by the ACAPT board.

The work of the panel will be conducted in a manner consistent with ACAPT’s mission, vision and strategic plan and with consideration of the guiding principles defined at the Summit which include evidence-based, stakeholders as partners, assessment, clear & explicit plan, forward thinking, inter-professional, and responsible & sustainable. 

Guiding principles for the work of the panel as defined at the Summit include processes and products that exemplify:

  1. Evidence-based practice,
  2. Stakeholders as partners,
  3. A culture of assessment,
  4. Clear & explicit plans,
  5. Forward thinking,
  6. Interprofessional collaboration, and
  7. Responsible & sustainable proposals 

SUMMIT RECOMMENDATION:  As the strategic panel considering integrated clinical education (ICE) worked through their charge in 2016 through 2017, discussion occurred on the use of simulation as a ‘goal oriented diverse active learning experience’ (per the original charge). The group has since determined that these experiences are not integrated clinical experiences but rather are more closely aligned with the academic portion of the PT education curriculum. This decision was based on the definitions of clinical education and clinical education experiences developed by the terminology panel. The definition for clinical education experience describes experiences that occur in physical therapy workplace environments. Therefore, the ICE Panel has determined that simulation activities are not in the purview of their charge and have suggested that a separate panel investigate simulation and its role in PT education programs. Doing so provides the opportunity to engage stakeholders, particularly clinical instructors and CCCEs, in the process to develop recommendations regarding simulation that align with current evidence and are responsive to stakeholder input.

CHARGE:  The ACAPT Integrated Clinical Education Strategic Initiative Panel will examine the role of simulation in PT education programs and provide options/best practices for the effective use of simulation in physical therapy curricula.  The specific charge to this working panel is: 

  • Investigate and describe the current use of simulation within physical therapist and other related health professions education programs,
  • Describe models/best practices for the use of simulation within physical therapist education programs, and
  • Explore the role of simulation to meet accreditation standards and required elements, particularly those curriculum elements related to clinical education and interprofessional education.

CHAIR:  The panel will be chaired by an applicant selected by the ACAPT Board of Directors

QUALIFICATIONS FOR PANEL APPOINTEES

All members of the strategic initiative panel will have knowledge and/or experience with contemporary physical therapy clinical education.  In addition, members should be:

  • Associated with an ACAPT member program including partnering clinical sites
  • Able to meet the time commitment required to participate which is estimated to be a minimum of two face-to-face meetings per year at ELC and CSM.The group will meet monthly for 2 hours via electronic media with assigned tasks for completion between meetings.Sub-group activities may be created and assigned.Total service on the task for is anticipated to be 18 months to two years.
  • Able to participate productively in the process of group dialogue and decision-making; can advocate for own views
  • Able to review, appraise and apply data
  • Able to consider alternatives and new ideas

In addition, we are seeking members with expertise in the following areas:

  • Health policy, reimbursement and accreditation as it relates to clinical education
  • Development and/or assessment of clinical competencies.
  • Curriculum development and assessment
  • Simulation in healthcare education

The panel will have a chair and 8-10 panel members with representation of individuals from across the academic and clinical environment.
