Grantsmanship & Mentorship in Education Research (GAMER) workshop - now cancelled

May 26, 2020

The COVID-19 crisis has created many challenges for the physical therapy educational enterprise. We think it is deeply important to maintain and progress our commitment to developing the next generation of education researchers through professional development activities like the Grantsmanship and Mentorship in Education Research (GAMER).

Regretfully, due to the uncertainty posed by the COVID-19 pandemic on multiple levels, the GAMER planning group has decided to postpone the GAMER Workshop originally planned for October 29 – November 1, 2020. We, the Education Leadership Partnership (ACAPT, APTA and the Academy of PT Education), want all members of the physical therapy education community to know that this change does not affect our abiding and ongoing commitment to the development of exceptional education researchers of the future!

This decision was based on the following considerations:

  • Potential travel restrictions during fall 2020 for workshop faculty and participants.
  • Potential limits or holds on professional development funds for participants during fall 2020.
  • Although a virtual workshop was considered, mentors and mentees felt that the face-to-face formal, informal and frequent interactions with faculty and peers throughout the intensive 4-day workshop were unlikely to be duplicated in a virtual environment
  • Recognition that many PT faculty may still be learning how to optimize their on-line teaching and student learning during the Fall semester requiring substantial investment of time and energy -- this could affect the amount of time and energy that could be devoted to the development and refinement of promising education research proposals.
  • Uncertainty about the type and extent of state to state restrictions on mobility that may be in effect during Fall 2020, especially if there is a “second wave” of viral activity.

We remain hopeful that we will be able to offer the GAMER Workshop again in 2021. Previous participants in the 2018 and 2019 GAMER cohorts universally agree that attendance at the workshop and dedicated interaction with workshop faculty, mentors and peers was an enriching experience that contributed to their personal and professional development.
