Purpose

  • Help prospective students develop a sense of agency to advance their professional opportunities as their career develops.
  • Identify programmatic solutions to challenges related to mental health and wellbeing, financial literacy and sustainability, social issues, changes in expectations around how education is taught/received, climate change, etc.
  • Help students prepare for the clinical experiences both before and during their clinical rotation.
  • Help students learn how to study and prepare for exams with examples of time management strategies.
  • Recommend ways to bring mentors in monthly/weekly to talk to students and provide information to shape their understanding of the real experiences after graduation.
  • Explore concepts of 2-staged licensure (earn an income before you graduate) to help students learn how to pay down their loan by pursuing experiences that build knowledge while in school and pay back for it.
  • Provide suggestions/resources for reducing burn-out. Identify ways to help them expand on their sense of altruism and professional development throughout the program.
  • Develop strategies to ensure faculty are teaching with contemporary expertise both from a clinical context and educational pedagogy.

This task group has identified the need to survey students to satisfy many of the objectives set forth from their initial planning. The group plans to work with the ACAPT Data Advisory Committee which will result in roadmaps and resources from the survey results.

Purpose

  • To provide physical therapist educators with an assessment of available outcome measures that can be used to assess the effectiveness of simulation-based learning in physical therapist education.

The task group has been busy reviewing literature and narrowing articles by PRISM guidelines. Their recommendations and manuscript preparations are expected to be finalized early next year.

  • Bonnie Virag, PT, DPT, ATC, MA - University of Pittsburgh Department of Physical Therapy
  • Allie Wilson, PT, DPT, ATC - SSM Health Physical Therapy

Purpose

  • Define what a systems approach should be used to define social determinants of health (SDOH) for physical therapy (e.g., involving communities; strengthening capacity and capability; scaling practice; sustaining outcomes; values and principles).
  • Define SDOH content for entry-level practice that is threaded throughout the curriculum.
  • Determine pedagogical strategies for implementing SDOH into the curriculum with two.

To identify the current practices by peers, the task group has created a survey for PharmD and MD/PA programs. These survey results will be compared to industry articles. Among this survey, they have also drafted surveys to receive examples of screening tools in clinics, options for learning assessments, and determine the inclusivity of content. The group will work with the Data Advisory Committee to finalize surveys.
