Diversity & Equity Inclusion

National Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Commission (NEDIC) Summit & other DEI support

In June 2022, representatives from 7 health professions convened at the ACAPT National Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (NEDIC) Summit to identify actions to:

  • Increase enrollment, retention and graduation of more diverse students.

  • Increase the number of individuals from historically-marginalized racial and ethnic groups among faculty and leadership roles.

Actions to promote change and opportunity

    • At the heart of Lisa VanHoose's presentation during the 2022 Lynda D. Woodruff Lecture on DEI in June 2022 - an event ACAPT proudly co-sponsored - was the concept of "DEI fatigue," a term used to describe any stress associated with DEI efforts in organizations, but that manifests itself in what VanHoose described as a "subtle resistance [to DEI efforts] that may erode workplace performance."

    • Students, faculty and clinical partners at Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs) participated in a free webinar to encourage more diversity in the PT population pursing a PhD & career in academia.

    • ACAPT’s Consortium for Humanities, Ethics & Professionalism (CHEP) covered critical perspectives of disability in this recorded webinar.

    • Updated resources at acapt.org/diversity.

Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs identify DEI as a top area for improvement

According to the January 2022 Institutional Profile Survey, many DPT programs would like to build upon their diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

    • Fifty-eight percent (58%) feel they have at least some room to improve to include DEI measurable outcomes in their strategic plan.
    • Fifty percent (50%) note that they could better act upon collected data to improve the culture for inclusivity.
    • Forty-eight percent (48%) report they could better assess non-academic obstacles to degree completion.
    • Forty-four percent (44%) could improve in acting upon their own data to increase diversity in their student body.

THANK YOU to all the generous supporters for the NEDIC Summit, including the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation who provided a $25,000 President's Grant!
