Upcoming Carnegie classification updates

Nov 13, 2023

American Council on Education (ACE) & the Carnegie Foundation announced new, more transparent methodology for "R1” designation & an overall shift to multi-dimensional categories reflecting diversity of colleges:

  • The iteration of the Carnegie Classifications that will be released in early 2025 will revise the Basic Classification to  create new, expanded multi-dimensional groupings that go beyond the current single label (such as Master’s Colleges and Universities: Medium Programs.)
  • Theses classification categories, under development now, will describe more accurately the multifaceted nature of today’s colleges and universities and their missions.
  • The 2025 Carnegie Classifications also will make significant changes to how research is recognized, including to the methodology that determines whether an institution is classified as R1.
