ACAPT New FlexCast Explores the Role of AI in Expanding Clinical Education

May 4, 2026

ACAPT’s newest episode of FlexCast examines how AI is being used to enhance clinical education in Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) programs.

Hosted by Matt Calendrillo, Chair of ACAPT’s Clinical Education Commission, the episode features Benjamin Stern, MS, DPT, of Tufts University School of Medicine, who shares his work in developing AI-powered patient simulations to support student learning.

The conversation highlights how programs can expand opportunities for clinical practice through customizable patient interactions, including text- and voice-based simulations. These tools allow students to engage in repeated patient encounters, build communication and clinical reasoning skills, and receive immediate, targeted feedback.

Key themes include integrating AI into existing curricula, creating scalable learning experiences, and addressing common challenges related to faculty time and access to clinical practice opportunities.

This episode provides practical insights for academic leaders and faculty exploring innovative approaches to strengthen clinical education and student outcomes.
