New FlexCast: Exploring innovation across health professions education with the National Academies

Oct 29, 2026

What can physical therapy education learn from other health professions, and how can we contribute to the conversation?

In the latest episode of FlexCast, ACAPT welcomes Dr. Kim Dunleavy, PT, OCS, and Dr. Carole Tucker, PT, involved with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine's Global Forum on Innovation in Health Professional Education to explore the ideas, challenges and opportunities shaping the future of healthcare education.

As a sponsor of the Global Forum, ACAPT helps connect academic physical therapy to broader conversations about the future of health professions education.

Breaking down silos in healthcare education

Many of the challenges facing DPT programs are shared across the health professions. From artificial intelligence and educational innovation to faculty development, workforce preparation and evolving models of healthcare delivery, educators are navigating an increasingly complex landscape.

The Global Forum brings together perspectives from multiple health professions to examine these challenges, share knowledge and explore opportunities for collaboration.

This FlexCast episode introduces listeners to the Forum's work and highlights recent discussions surrounding artificial intelligence, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and efforts to envision a more adaptable system for educating healthcare professionals.

Bringing the conversation back to physical therapy

The episode explores how physical therapy educators can use insights from other health professions to inform curriculum development, faculty scholarship, educational innovation and strategic planning.

It also highlights the importance of ensuring physical therapy's perspective is represented as national and global conversations about healthcare education continue to evolve.

Most importantly, members will learn how to explore the Forum's workshops and resources, participate in upcoming discussions and bring new ideas back to their institutions.

The future of health professions education is a shared responsibility. Physical therapy educators have an important role in shaping it.
