Eligibility Criteria for People Providing Letters of Recommendation

The following four (4) categories of individuals are eligible to write letters of recommendation for students for the National Physical Therapy Student Honor Society.

  1. Any faculty member from an ACAPT member program.  Program Directors/Chairs are ineligible to recommend students for the Honor Society (see part b. step #1 below).
  2. Any licensed physical therapist who has significantly interacted with a PT student from an ACAPT member program during the time the student is enrolled in a DPT program … this precludes any experiences/observations occurring before matriculation into PT school.  Examples of acceptable persons who can provide a recommendation: “An APTA Chapter President who has worked with a PT student on Chapter related efforts”, or “The Chairperson of an APTA committee who has worked with a PT student who has served as a student committee member”.  Recommendations from licensed physical therapists will likely be focused on the “service” or “leadership” categories and may be less applicable for the “academic achievement” category.
  3. A Clinical Instructor (CI) who has significantly interacted with the student for a minimum of a 6-week full-time clinical affiliation.  Again, this may be more applicable for the “service” and “leadership” categories.
  4. Any current or former DPT student who has been formally inducted into the National Student Honors Society.

Those Who Are Ineligible to Write Letters of Recommendation for Candidates:

  1. The applicant
  2. Fellow students
  3. ACAPT Program Directors/Chairs
