Enhancing DPT program authority & influence

Apr 25, 2023

In 2021, ACAPT members voted to support that by 2030:

  • All physical therapy educational units will be a department, school, or college of physical therapy.

  • The leader of the educational unit will be a physical therapist who serves as the chairperson/head of that department, dean of that school or college, or an equivalent title.

The chairperson or dean of the physical therapy unit will also:

  • Have autonomy of the fiscal resources & budgetary oversight of DPT program.  Upcoming survey reporting will cover program autonomy & influence.

  • Report directly to either a dean, chief academic officer (i.e., provost, vice president of academic affairs), or an equivalent.

Steps your program can take to help meet the motion, as appropriate

If your institution does not currently meet the criteria above, we recommend you provide this ACAPT member-approved motion to your dean or provost to help make an argument for a change.
