Academic Excellence

Define and encourage clear, flexible, and scalable criteria for excellence in physical therapy education that empower programs and individuals to engage meaningfully, regardless of resources or institutional size.

Academic Excellence reflects ACAPT’s commitment to fostering high-quality, forward-thinking PT education rooted in effective teaching, academic leadership, and ongoing professional learning. Through a refreshed Excellence Framework, ACAPT will support programs in defining and pursuing excellence based on their unique contexts, goals, and student populations. This work will elevate academic advancement through faculty development, mentorship, and scholarly engagement while strengthening teaching and learning through inclusive, evidence-based practices. Excellence is viewed as a continuous journey, not a competitive benchmark, and will be advanced through cross-institutional collaboration, innovation, and shared reflection. By centering flexibility and equity, ACAPT seeks to cultivate a culture where all institutions can identify, engage with, and grow their own models of excellence.

Strategies

  • Refresh and relaunch the ACAPT Excellence Framework with member input to ensure clarity, flexibility, and relevance across diverse institutions.
  • Promote the framework as a self-assessment and planning tool integrated into faculty development, curriculum review, and institutional goal-setting.
  • Develop a recognition model that highlights institutional engagement in innovation, teaching excellence, and inclusive practices without comparative ranking.
  • Showcase program achievements through case studies, conference features, newsletters, and ACAPT digital platforms.
  • Support research that explores evolving definitions and models of excellence in PT education, particularly in academic advancement and teaching practices.
  • Host learning events and forums focused on emerging topics such as CBE, simulation, AI, inclusive pedagogy, and outcomes assessment.
  • Initiate partnerships with organizations like CAPTE, APTA, and other education leaders to align on shared definitions and benchmarks of excellence.
  • Encourage all ACAPT Institutes and Clinical Education teams to embed components of the framework into their strategic initiatives and evaluations.
  • Create regular feedback opportunities, such as surveys and focus groups, to guide the framework’s ongoing relevance and evolution.
  • Monitor and address equity in recognition and engagement by tracking participation across institution types, sizes, and geographic regions.

Success Indicators

  • The Excellence Framework is refreshed, disseminated, and actively used by a broad range of programs as a tool for institutional planning, faculty (both academic and clinician) development, and reflective practice.
  • Program participation in excellence-related initiatives increases annually, with demonstrated engagement across a diversity of institution types, sizes, and missions.
  • Members increasingly view excellence as a process of continuous improvement, collaboration, and innovation, rather than competition or comparison.
  • The concept of academic excellence is regularly explored through member-generated content, case studies, and research supported or shared by ACAPT.

Organizational Vitality

Ensure internal efficiency, financial sustainability, and strategic growth beyond reliance on membership dues within physical therapy academia.

Organizational Vitality reflects ACAPT’s commitment to building a resilient, adaptable, and sustainable association model that can support its strategic goals and evolving member needs. This priority focuses on diversifying revenue streams, streamlining operations, and building strong internal systems that empower both staff and volunteers. With limited resources and a small staff, ACAPT must operate with clarity, agility, and a growth mindset. Key efforts include strengthening volunteer leadership pipelines, cultivating long-term sponsorships, improving operational workflows, and investing in staff satisfaction and clarity of roles. By reinforcing its internal infrastructure and reducing financial dependence on dues, ACAPT can remain mission-driven while expanding its impact and capacity to serve the academic PT community.

Strategies

  • A growing percentage of ACAPT’s annual revenue is sourced from non-dues income such as grants, sponsorships, and educational offerings.
  • ACAPT builds long-term, values-aligned relationships with sponsors and partners who support its mission and programming.
  • Staff and volunteers report improved clarity in roles, expectations, and satisfaction with their experience.
  • Volunteer pipelines are active, supported, and aligned with succession planning and leadership development needs.
  • Internal processes support timely execution of programs and reduce bottlenecks in decision-making and implementation.

Success Indicators

  • Establish a multi-year sponsorship strategy that includes benefits, relationship-building, and recognition tied to ACAPT’s mission and values.
  • Create a framework for new revenue-generating educational offerings, events, or microlearning programs that require minimal staff resources.
  • Review and refine internal workflows to reduce redundancy, improve communication, and clarify staff responsibilities.
  • Implement regular check-ins or brief staff feedback loops to assess workload, morale, and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Formalize volunteer onboarding and leadership training resources to better prepare members stepping into service roles.
  • Build a volunteer tracking and recognition system to monitor engagement and identify leadership potential.
  • Use simple planning tools to reduce time from idea to program launch and support quick pivots based on member needs.
  • Evaluate and improve governance and decision-making timelines to increase responsiveness while maintaining accountability.
  • Apply basic metrics to measure organizational health, such as revenue diversification, retention of sponsors, and speed of execution.
