Every physical therapist educator faces the complexities and challenges inherent in the teaching and learning of clinical reasoning, whether working with students in the classroom and clinical settings, with residents and fellows in post-professional programs or with colleagues across health professions.
A sold-out, highly-interactive Clinical Reasoning Symposium in April 2023 tackled these challenges to help deepen understanding & further develop teaching, learning, and assessment strategies that bridge the gap across academic and clinical learning environments.
During the stimulating event held at Creighton University's Health Science Campus in Phoenix, speakers & panelists joined more than 75 participants in the discussion of innovative and forward-thinking ideas for facilitation and assessment of clinical reasoning including:
- Developing a clinical reasoning curriculum.
- Incorporating humanities in a clinical reasoning curriculum.
- Clinical reasoning as a competency.
- Transformative learning and assessment of clinical reasoning.
- How to do continue to build & optimize our community interested in clinical reasoning.
Researchers also addressed clinical reasoning questions during the Friday evening reception with 18 poster presentations. Congratulations to each of these researchers!
"The symposium was very energizing with so many interesting people & ideas circulating all the time," said Murray Maitland, PT, PhD at University of Washington. "I went away with many practical ways to communicate these concepts and strategies for my students."
We’ve come a long way with clinical reasoning as a profession…we have a long way to go!
