How did you first get involved with clinical reasoning and what drew you to it?
Clinical reasoning was my dissertation project. I explored the use of a virtual patient program vs. paper cases to improve clinical reasoning. I was fortunate enough to have Gail Jensen on my committee and through her and my work I met several others who had done work in clinical reasoning as well. We met informally a few times to discuss our work and at one CSM, we were sitting in an ACAPT meeting when they introduced the consortium option. We all looked at each other and said “we need to do this” and we did.
What is the top priority for CRCAC?
Trying to get everyone on the same page as to what clinical reasoning in physical therapy is and then working on best practices to develop and assess it.
What are the top 1-3 ways CRCAC members' work has been affected by COVID-19 – and how are you adapting?
The virus has definitely impacted our research. We are working on a project exploring how PTs use movement in their clinical reasoning process. Most of us are program directors so our time for research has been limited by managing our programs through the pandemic.
