- Fostering student professional behaviors and skills by implementing an early part-time ICE
Transitioning from student to clinician is a journey and takes time. But why not set the bar high and expect the practice of professional behaviors and skills at matriculation?
After just 6 weeks in DPT program, students at the University of the Pacific in Stockton, California begin a part-time integrated clinical education (ICE) we call “Fall Fridays,” for 4 hours per day for 5 consecutive Fridays. They are placed with local clinicians who know our program and the level of the students.
- Students appreciate applying what they are learning right away in the program, and most say they did not realize how much they knew so early in the curriculum.
- Clinicians love the opportunity to help shape future PTs early in their training, and often invite students back for full-time experiences.
- This part-time ICE helps nurture the program-to-clinic relationship and pave the way for future placements
Learning objectives: By the end of the presentation the attendee will be able to:
- Recognize the benefits for all stakeholders of an ICE in the first semester of a PT/PTA program.
- Identify the key stakeholders’ roles for creating a successful, early ICE.
- Strategies to incorporate sensor technology in clinical practice, sports settings, and home use.
