Simulation's other side: Engaging your simulated patients (webinar)

When:

Much simulation training for physical therapy faculty focuses on the students/learners, but what about the other half of the simulation…the standardized/simulated patient (SP)? In this one-hour course, Professor Sharon L. Gorman covers considerations related to standardized/simulated patient issues by focusing on implementing standards of best practice. She highlights specific

  • factors related to SP training learning
  • strategies to better engage your SPs during case development
  • methods that ensure safe working conditions for your SPs.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the five domains in the Association of Standardized Patient Educators Standards of Best Practice (ASPE SOBP).
  • Construct cases with standardized/simulated patient input factors for consideration.
  • Monitor simulations to ensure a safe work environment for standardized/simulated patients.
  • Plan training to maximize standardized/simulated patient engagement and involvement for better outcomes.

Target audience

  • Physical therapy educators and academic faculty who are interested in simulation-based learning
  • Program chairs who are implanting simulation-based learning experiences in their curricula.

Speaker

Sharon Gorman, PT, DPTSc, is Professor of Physical Therapy at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland, CA. She teaches Doctor of Physical Therapy students in the areas of acute care and management of medically complex patients. She has been actively incorporating simulation-based education into her courses since 2008, and works interprofessionally with the accredited Health Sciences Simulation Center at Samuel Merritt. Dr. Gorman was a member ACAPT’s Strategic Initiative Panel on Simulation and has published and presented in the area of simulation in physical therapy education.

She received her Doctor of Science degree in Physical Therapy at University of California/San Francisco State University, a Master of Science in Health Science at San Francisco State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy from Mt. St. Mary’s University, Los Angeles.

Dr. Gorman is board certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties as a Geriatric Clinical Specialist and is a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow of the National Academies of practice. Dr. Gorman’s professional service spans local district, state, and national American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) elected positions, committees, and volunteer activities. She currently is the APTA Acute Care Social Media Subcommittee Chair and serves as a California Delegate to the APTA House of Delegates.
