APTA announces CPI revisions & new technology platform

Jun 14, 2022

APTA is hosting a webinar to share the final version of the revised Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI)
Monday, December 12, 2022 from 7:00 - 8.00 p.m. ET.
APTA has provided this Zoom link for participants.

Below is from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA):

To keep up with best practices in clinical education assessment, APTA is updating their clinical performance instruments for clinical education within PT and PTA academic programs. They expect to have revised tools for the 2023-2024 academic year. To accommodate the update, in June 2023 APTA will sunset the current CPI and CSIF platforms provided by Liaison International, the vendor that currently hosts the CPI tools. A new, mobile-friendly platform will take its place.

APTA is committed to ensuring that these high-stakes assessment instruments are psychometrically sound and that programs can have confidence in student performance and progression decisions made based on them. To date, APTA has invested more than $100,000 in the psychometric review process to evaluate the CPI tools. They will work over the next 12 months toward a smooth transition from the old tools to the new ones for implementation by June 2023.

They are working with Human Resources Research Organization to conduct the psychometric review in several phases:

  • Phase 1, completed: Audit and recommendations. September 2020.
  • Phase 2, completed: Focus on intended use of the CPIs. April 2022.
  • Phase 3, completed: Focus on alignment of the CPIs with contemporary practice. May 2022.
  • Phase 4, June-November 2022: Revision of CPI content and rating scale.
  • Phase 5, June-November 2022: Development of scoring model and preliminary passing standard.

Technical reports from Phases 2 and 3 revealed the need for the updates, which will address the reliability and validity of these tools while reducing redundancies and streamlining them. APTA thanks the members and stakeholders who participated in interviews, focus groups, and the national survey that supported these phases of the review process.

A timeline for next steps takes the transition from fall 2022 to implementation:

  • November 2022-February 2023: The selected technology vendor will build the new system.
  • March 2023: They will pilot the new tools and technology platform.
  • March-June 2023: A user-friendly training system will be available.
  • May-June 2023: The revised tools will launch on the new platform.

APTA will also review the Clinical Site Information Form in the coming months. Like the review process of the CPIs, APTA will engage users to identify opportunities to enhance that tool.

Liaison has been supportive of this transition plan and has agreed to continue to support students using the older tools during the spring and summer transition, and to support subscribers in archiving their historical student data by June 2023. They are committed to keeping you informed throughout the process. You’ll receive updates as more decisions are made and the progress continues, from APTA, the APTA Academy of Education’s special interest groups for clinical education and physical therapist assistant educators, and the American Council of Academic Physical Therapy’s (ACAPT) National Consortium of Clinical Educators.
